LIVING
HOPE COMMUNITY CHURCH’S MUSIC MINISTRY
Music ministry involvement at
Living Hope has been limited to the worship team,
special music, and occasional ensemble/choir specials.
Following are descriptions of the ministries that are
now available, who is qualified for them, and a
questionnaire to be filled out by any who may have an
interest in participating in some aspect of music
ministry at Living Hope. If the Lord has given you a
desire to serve Him musically, let your heart’s desire
be known via this questionnaire, the Sunday morning
response card, or by speaking directly to Isaac Miller,
our worship leader.
.
WORSHIP TEAM
The worship team is the primary
music ministry at Living Hope, as it is a vessel used
every Sunday morning. Its participants have been
consistent and rehearsals have involved a sharing/prayer
time in addition to learning songs. Commitment to the
requirements of the team and to its individual members
are important to the effectiveness of this ministry, as
disunity and personal conflicts can hinder the work of
the Spirit in and through us. The worship team is in a
position of service and it is assumed that its
participants are committed to the body and ministry of
Living Hope and furthering of God’s kingdom. Therefore,
anyone who is interested in worship team needs to have
attended Living Hope regularly for at least 3 months.
This gives (you and the church family) the time needed
to know if this is the body with whom you wish to
identify.
1) SPIRITUAL – a) Worship team is much more than an
outlet to sing or play an instrument. Everyone on the
worship team must be a reborn Christian or a true seeker
who is searching and open to Jesus Christ. b) It is
important that you are not living in known sin
(habitually lying, stealing, having an affair or sex
outside of marriage, abusing drugs/alcohol, spouse/child
abuse, etc.) or nursing known hatred, bitterness, envy,
etc. (feeling these things and not taking steps to
resolve them). No one is perfect and we are all in
process, but known sin, whether of the flesh or of the
heart, must be approached seriously. If members of the
worship team do not deal with known sin, it has great
potential to negatively affect our times of worship. c)
Those on the worship team must be worshipers. “…the kind
of worshipers the Father seeks..must worship in spirit
and in truth.” (John 4:24) Worshipping is more than
just singing/playing songs; worship comes from within a
heart that loves the Father and desires to walk in
obedience to Him; it is expressed in all of one’s
life…yes, through music, but also through testimony
(what you say with your mouth) and holiness (how you
live). Those on the worship team are leaders and need
to be worshipers in order to lead worship.
2) MUSICAL – Vocalists need to be able to sing in
tune, blend, sing different styles of music moderately
well, and have larger than an octave range (unless able
to harmonize). Voices with moderate strength and clear
tone (not airy) blend together best. Instrumentalists
need to be able to play their instruments confidently
and sensitively, and need to be able to play the various
styles of music that we use here at Living Hope. The
better musicians will be used more often because of the
strong foundation they provide for the congregation to
follow.
3) TIME COMMITMENT – The time you are willing to
commit (every week, once/month, etc.) must be
communicated to the worship team leader. [You will not
be scheduled more than you want to be used, and may be
used less than you desire. As there are enough musicians
to do so, the schedule will allow “full-timers” to have
time off each month.] In addition to a brief Sunday
morning rehearsal (7:30-9:00); there is a Thursday
evening rehearsal (usually 5:30-8:00) the week prior to
the Sunday you’re scheduled to lead. If you need extra
rehearsal before Sunday, it is your responsibility to do
that on your own. Each person should also allow time to
spiritually prepare themselves for the service he/she is
scheduled to lead.
SPECIAL MUSIC
Special music in the worship service is more than just
something to add variety; it is another way in which the
Holy Spirit can minister to our hearts. Therefore, it
is not just an opportunity to use vocal or instrumental
talents. Soloists are in a position of temporary
leadership in the service and it is assumed that they
are committed to the body and ministry of Living Hope
Community Church. This gives you (and the church
family) the time needed to know if this is the body with
whom you wish to identify. At this time, there is no
audition procedure necessary, but the following
questions will help you examine yourself to see if this
is an area where the Lord wants you to minister.
1) SPIRITUAL – Are you walking in close dependence on
Jesus? Are you living in known sin (see under
“SPIRITUAL” on page 1)? Does your lifestyle, your
behavior in all circumstances, and your conversation
reflect your love for Jesus? Would those who know you
best wonder why you were on the platform “ministering”?
2) MUSICAL – What is your musical ability? Do you
have enough skill and confidence to clearly communicate
and interpretively sing/play the music? (Can you
sing/play on pitch? Can you perform smoothly the style
of the piece? Can you reflect emotion in your
singing/playing?) Do you have any experience? (Not
necessarily a requirement, but lack of experience often
shows itself in nervousness that hinders the
performance.)
3) PURPOSE
– Why do you want to do special music? Do you have a
purpose for sharing musically other than to let people
hear you? Do you feel compelled to minister in
song? What do you have to share? Why are you sharing and
to whom is it directed? Do you want to sing/play to the
Lord in worship or prayer? Do you wish to bring
encouragement or exhortation or challenge to the
congregation?
